AWANA begins tomorrow [Church] — boro @ 10:41 pm

Well, the reason for my lack of posting over the last few weeks is that my wife and I have been very busy doing the final touches to get ready for this year’s AWANA club at Salem Heights Church. I am the “Commander” and my wife is the un-official “secretary”. Basically I am in charge of the program which has about 40 adult leaders, and 130 clubbers ranging in ages from 3 to 18. My wife does an excellent job of helping me get everything done. If it wasn’t for her I don’t know how I would be able to get everything scheduled. As we work as a team, the things get done.

I love AWANA because I love to see the Lord Jesus work in the lives of children and young adults. It continually amazes me what the Word of God will do in lives when children commit to memorizing and applying it. It truly is amazing, and wonderful to see!

Tomorrow is our kick-off night. The Lord has provided the volunteers to fill all of our open positions except Worship leader. We are all praying that the Lord will bring that person forward. We are trusting that He will do so, and that His plan will be accomplished in our lives as leaders, and also in these children’s lives.

God is gracious, and it is an awesome, even fearful, thing to be used by Him.

Happy Anniversary [General] — boro @ 10:53 am

No, not mine, the anniversary of the world’s first computer ‘bug’. The first bug was moth induced, and the term has been with us since. Check out more information about it here and here.

postfix-smtp_auth-tls [Linux] — boro @ 11:59 pm

Well, tonight I finally got my debian box’s email system up to the level I wanted it to be at. I have setup postfix-smtp_auth-tls before, but that was using packages from RH, and I didn’t know how simple it would be to do this under debian. Well it turns out to have been a larger pain that I would have hoped for, but it is working just fine now.

After having setup all of the configuration options like I was told to do by various sites, I still had the following error:

warning: SASL authentication problem:

This error had me quite frustrated for awhile, until I came across the following nugget.

The final fix ended up being the following lines in my /etc/postfix/sasl/smtpd.conf file:

pwcheck_method: auxprop
auxprop_plugin: sasldb

Now I have a happy tls enabled postfix setup, and I can allow remote SMTP auth. Isn’t life grand!

labor day weekend [General] — boro @ 2:15 pm

Labor day weekend has now come and gone. I hope yours was as fun as mine was!

My folks came down for the weekend and stayed with us until Monday. On Saturday Dad, Shorts and I played golf at Lakeside Golf Course in Lincoln City. None of us did too hot, as it was quite a difficult golf course. The course had many fairways that consisted of major slopes from one side of the fairway to the other. Quite often you had to either hit the ball directly onto the green, or plan on hitting your ball from well below the green as you were in a hole. This was drastically accentuated by the fact that the course was very, very dry which caused the balls to roll much farther than normal. I think the final scores were something like a 112, 116, and 124. My dad won with myself and then Shorts following. For how badly we played some of those holes I thought those scores were far less than we could have had.

We also ended up playing a round of golf yesterday. The three of us went to Evergreen Golf Course in Mt. Angel. We have played here several times and we all like it. Although it is only a 9-hole course, the fees are very reasonable, and it is fun to play. Monday proved to be an excellent day to play golf. Our final scores ended up being 106, 108, and 114 (IIRC), with the three of us being in the same order as on Saturday. The second half of the course was very frustrating for me. I had shot a 48 on the first time around, and was looking forward to have a good chance to break 100. On the first hole I actually got a birdy (only my third one ever), however it went seriously down-hill from there. I ended up with a 60! blech!! The problem was that I had a couple bad holes in a row, and I lost my temper. This caused me to lose my concentration and play very badly. What made me feel even worse is that I knew that my attitude was wrong, even sinful, and that I was doing a bad job of being a witness for Christ. With the Lord’s grace, and some encouragement from my dad and brother, I was able to get a good attitude back in time for the final hole. The round was fun, though I wish I hadn’t lost my temper. Thankfully the Lord is merciful and is willing to use cracked pots.

On the whole my family had a relaxing weekend! Pastor Carl’s message on Sunday was very encouraging/convicting, and we are seeing the Lord provide for His ministries in amazing ways. Tonight we are looking forward to our kick-off leader’s meeting! Please be praying that the Lord will continue to train me to be a better leader, and how I can better shepherd the AWANA program.
