As I sit here and wait for a client to show up, I am reminded of how badly I tend to wait. I don’t think I have ever met someone who likes to wait, be it for money, or even punishment. No matter what it is, we would rather have it done with and move on than wait for it to happen. This can be especially troublesome when you are young like I am. Currently I am blessed with a great job that I love, however, sometimes I look forward to some of the relief of my financial stresses that “should” come with more years in the work force and higher pay. I don’t want to wait for it to happen, I want it now.
However, this attitude is wrong and sinful. Matthew 6:25-34 addresses this.
25 “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? 28 “And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 “But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! 31 “Do not worry then, saying, `What will we eat?’ or `What will we drink?’ or `What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
My impatience to have the financial stresses removed from my life, are in direct contradiction to this passage. I am worrying about tomorrow and the things that I will need, instead of trusting God to take care of these things and being obedient by doing His will. When my heart is focused on money instead of God, I am not seeking His kingdom first, I am seeking my kingdom first. At church we sing the song “It’s all about you”. If my eyes are on my needs, it is “all about me”. I want my heart to be focused on Him, and I want my hands to be doing His will. When I am doing that, then my focus will be right, and the Lord will lead me through daily walk of life and will provide for me and my family. That is a promise of His Word, and He will always do as He has promised.
