try and try again [General] — boro @ 12:19 pm

Very soon the modification of last year’s school zone speed limit law will take affect (effect?). Now instead of being limited to 20mph in school zones (where the base speed was 30mph or less) all the time, you will now only be reduced between 7am - 5pm M-F. Many people thought it quite ridiculous that you had to slow down at midnight, as there would certainly be many children on school property at that hour. It seems that our lawmakers have listened to reason (or whining) and changed it to more reasonable hours.

I have also heard that people are trying to get any fines repealed since the law was changed. However, I think it reasonable that since they broke the law, no matter that it was rather silly, they should still have to pay the penalty. Thoughts?

Well I know that up in Washington the school zones are enforced only during certain times of the school day. Because of this I have seen a lot of people get out of there speeding ticket because they were able to argue that the kids weren’t around cause they were in class (or should be). I do like the fact that a lot of places they have moved to having a flashing light when the speed limit is enforced. So basically if you get nailed speeding through a school zone I tend to laugh cause up here most all of them are so overly labeled that there really is no way to plead ignorance….

I agree that you would have to be blind to not see a school zone in Washington. But then you wouldn’t have a license either. now that is a catch 21

But I get irritated with how many of these zones there actually are, but not only that the people that put out signs of children running in the street with such things as “slow down for our kids sake”. For goodness sake who doesn’t teach their kids that if a person and a car go head to head that the winner well above 50% of the time isn’t the person? I used to live on the main road of a small town and the speed limit through the town was 45 mph. Did I or any of the other kids get hit? The only time I did was by my parents and it was on the butt because I did what they told me not to and threw rocks at cars standing right next to the road. (for the record they found out because I got a rock inside a convertable and the guy stopped to tell my Dad what me and the neighbor kid were doing)

I say we start a new subject in school. Called “common sense” you either pass or fail. It takes place on the street twice a day, and the student decides if they should cross the street in front of a moving vehicle. This may not fly in the liberal city of Seattle I’m sure, but maybe a class on the physics of the human body and how it is effected (affected?) by fast moving metalic objects right after sex ed.

Not like there were policemen exactly swarming the school zones at midnight anyway… it was pretty unenforceable from the start.

Its still annoying to have to slow down at 10 in the morning when there are no kids anywhere, especially in the summer, when no one is in school.
